Mycorrhizal FungiIn its simplest sense mycorrhizal fungi do everything plants roots do just BETTER
These mycorrhizal fungi are so much thinner and finer than the plant's own roots they can therefore find nutrients in the soil far more efficiently that the plant's own roots. The mycorrhizal fungi are especially good at finding nutrients that help flowering and fruiting such as Phosphorous and Potassium. As the strands of the mycorrhizal fungi can explore a much greater amount of soil than the plant's own roots alone they are far more likely to find trace elements and the rare nutrients that all plants need to grow well. Mycorrhizal fungi actually become an extension of the plants roots and the simbiotic relationship that the plant has with mycorrihzal fungi is one that once formed will be there for the life of the plant. It is worth noting that mycorrhizal fungi will not live in acid type soils so should not be used for plants such as azalea. If you notice a white fluffy formation on the plants roots then this is mycorrhizal fungi at work. Mycorrhizal fungi actively supports trees after they have been repotting and reduces the stresses on the plant. The simbiotic relationship between the plants roots and the mycorrhizal fungi takes about 2 weeks to form and then it will colonise. As mycorrhizal fungi increases its self you do not need to add a lot to the plant but it must be in direct contact with the plants root system to work.
